- Community Education Committee – Chairperson: Joanne Kinsey
- Responsible for community education and specifically one cancer event each year.
- The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fashion Show was held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center located in Egg Harbor Twp. Approximately 350 women attended this event. Angela shared pictures with the Coalition that was taken at this event. Teresa Berry from NBC 40 hosted, lunch was provided along with prizes and giveaways. Anita Linton spoke on “10 Myths of Breast Cancer”. The clothing was donated by the Dress Barn of Atlantic City and the models that were comfortable with sharing their personal stories, poems or points of interest did so as they modeled the clothing.
- Teen School Health Fair Project “Road to Good Health” was held on Wednesday, June 3rd from 10am to 12 noon at the Viking Academy in Atlantic City. Approximately 100 children from 7th to 12th grades attended. Educational tables were set up with colorful posters, interesting props and hands on activities regarding nutrition, exercise, stress, not smoking and the prevention of various diseases and cancers. Physical activities, dancing and games were also offered.
- Next Meeting: September, 2009 day and time TBD
- Healthy Lifestyle Committee – Chairperson: Ben Mount
- Responsible for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle to the public in response to the NJ-CCCP and CHIP/MAPP.
- The “Fun Steps to Fitness” event is scheduled for Friday, August, 14, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on the Atlantic County Bike Path starting at the Shore Mall and heading toward Ridge Ave. in Egg Harbor Township. This event features a one mile walk, activity stations, fitness fair, food demonstrations by Chef Mike, refreshments, healthy box lunches, prizes and give-a-ways. Participants will be given “passports” (one for adults and one for children) and as they go thru the various activities they will get their passport stamped. On the back of the adult passport there is an evaluation which counts as an activity. The passports will be collected at the end and used for the prize drawings. We need your help in promoting this event, obtaining additional prize give-a-ways, volunteers for that evening, and anyone interested in having a table with a small activity.

The speaker was Dr. David Casarett from the University of Pennsylvania; he spoke on the topic of Palliative Care and Hospice conversations with patients. There was also a portion on how to bill for Palliative Care and Hospice Services, 45 people attended this event.
- Next Meeting: September, 2009 day and time TBA
- Professional Education Committee – Chairperson: Dee McNeely-Greene
- Responsible for one local professional event each year.
- This committee is working on a traveling “Lunch and Learn” program. They will offer one series in the fall and one in the spring. There would be two sessions offered at each hospital location during lunch time. They will offer this program at three hospitals and one community location. Again this year The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is interested in being involved with this committee project.
- Next Meeting: August 11, 2009 at 9am at Holy Redeemer
- Tobacco Education Committee – Chairpersons: Linda Duca & Bob Schall
- The committee is responsible for projects that educate the public on the dangers of smoking.
- The committee is currently working on the “Hands of Hope for a Tobacco Free World” project. Our goal is to collect 1000 hands over the next 10 event period. Whenever the Coalition goes out to an event we will take the hand cut-outs and ask people to write their own personal messages and decorate the hand cut-outs. Angela brought examples of the hand cut-outs collected at an event in Galloway. The hands will be collected, linked together and displayed. This makes a clear statement from young to old that we need continued support for tobacco related services. This year the Camden County Cancer Coalition hopes to collect enough hands to wrap around the Trenton Capital building. If anyone would like to collect these hands at their next event please contact Angela for a “Tool Box” kit.
- Next Meeting: August 19, 2009 at the Atlantic County Division of Public Health
Updates:
- Barbershop Initiative
- Anita Linton reported that the Barbershop Initiative met all of their goals and even exceeded some of their goals. She also mentioned that the partnerships made throughout the last grant year are strong. This program covers 11 counties from Somerset to Cape May, she found throughout the last year that many of these counties are very interested in hearing about other types of health related issues too. Anita also found that while taking the program out to the different shops that it worked better if the screenings were done at the same time. She offers the “Talk and Trim” and “Cut Out Cancer” campaigns where the men get a free haircut and screening along with the education. She expects September to be a big month in Somerset County at the Women’s Health Center. There is a barber that will bring his chair and give free haircuts and the men can get screened, he will offer this service for four hours. Please give Anita names of any barbers you know and she will contact them about joining the Barbershop program.
- CEED Update
- Marge Scanny reported the CEED numbers for July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 there have been 446 women screened for breast cancer with 7 diagnosed with cancer. There were 762 screened for cervical cancer, 35 were CIN I to CIN III and -0- were invasive. The cervical numbers are higher due to younger women having a pap test done but are not age appropriate to have a mammogram screening. There have been 367 new women added to the program and 874 total women served. There were 507 re-screened, that puts our re-screened rate at 58%. There were 33 prostate screenings performed and 4 were diagnosed with cancer. The prostate and colorectal screenings are low primarily due to the lack of outreach and no funding for treatment. We have finally found a provider to perform our colonoscopies, Dr. Andrew Renny.
- We have received the following funding for the new grant year: Cancer Education Early Detection received $320,600. ACHLC received $65,000. Barbershop Initiative received $92,000. Tobacco received $102,000 which was cut by $5,000. The other grants continue to receive level funding.
- Marge encouraged everyone to keep CEED in mind when they hear of anyone that has lost their job or have reduced hours and lost their health insurance. We can help with their routine screenings until they get insurance again.
- Advocacy Update
- Marge Scanny gave everyone a copy of the “American Cancer Society Statement of Principles on What Constitutes Meaningful Health Insurance” to review. The ACS produced this evidence based definition that focuses on the four “A’s” – Adequacy, Availability, Affordability and Administrative simplicity and they are looking for these issues to be addressed. Marge encourages everyone to get involved so visit the website at www.acscan.org select your state and contact the congressmen in your district. Marge also gave everyone a copy of Congressman Frank LoBiondo of the 2nd District’s press release on the current Healthcare Reform Bill. The bill as currently written, increases cost, could reduce access to care which he will not support. Marge Scanny and Marion Morrison have scheduled an appointment with Congressman Frank LoBiondo and would like to invite anyone who lives in the 2nd District to go with them.
- Save the Date! Sunday, October 18, 2009 for the American Cancer Society Ocean City “Making Strides” Against Breast Cancer Event on 6th and Boardwalk. Please visit www.cancer.org/stridesonline today to sign up. Registration begins at 9am, survivor lap and warm-up at 9:40, kickoff 10 am. Joins us on this fun day.
