Review of May 7, 2008 Meeting Minutes
- Ben Mount pointed out the humorous error under the Healthy Lifestyle Committee that we were working on a childhood obesity prevention project rather then a childhood prevention project. This error will be corrected.
Committee Activities
Members are encouraged to participate in a committee. The committees are where the activities are planned and organized.
- Community Education Committee – Chairperson: Joanne Kinsey
- Responsible for community education and specifically one cancer event each year.
- This committee recently completed their event for last year, took a couple months off and will reconvene shortly. The next meeting will focus on the direction they take for the next grant year.
- Next Meeting: August 26th @ 10am at SMH
- Healthy Lifestyle Committee – Chairperson: Ben Mount
- Responsible for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle to the public in response to the NJ-CCCP and CHIP/MAPPS.
- The committee is working on a Five-A-Day Olympic event. This event is focused on fun Olympic events with a fruit/veggie twist. There will be cooking demonstrations, light refreshments and trivia. It will be held on August 15th between 5pm and 8:30pm at the Atlantic County Park in Estell Manor.
- Next Meeting: Today directly after the coalition meeting.
- Palliative Care Committee – Chairperson: Marianne Herman
- This committee is responsible for addressing palliative care issues in Atlantic County and to educate professionals and the public regarding palliative care.
- The committee is working on an outreach plan.
- Public education such as some joint projects with other committees.
- Joint program with Cape Regional Medical Center’s palliative care committee to put on a professional event for physicians.
- Next Meeting: September 17th @ 9am at SMH
- Professional Education Committee – Chairperson: Erin McAllister
- Responsible for one local professional event each year.
- The professional event is going to be held on November 7th this year. It will be held at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Carnegie Library in Atlantic City.
- The concept is the Latest and Greatest in Oncology Care and is directed toward social workers and nurses.
- Next Meeting: August 13th @ 9am at Stockton (D116).
- Tobacco Education Committee – Chairperson: Jennifer Pielhaus
- The committee is responsible for projects that educate the public on the dangers of smoking.
- The committee is making goodie bags for Parent’s Night on how to talk to your children about not smoking. The committee is making 1,000 bags.
- We are also looking for a new committee chair as Jennifer will be focusing on different topics. Any interested parties should contact Angela.
- Next Meeting: September 3rd @ 10am at SMH. (We will be bag stuffing!)
Other Projects
- Family Fun Day at Egg Harbor Township/Patch
- The coalition will be going to the Family Fun Day to offer a state patch to children. This will be our first time and it will educate children on tobacco, skin cancer, nutrition and exercise. The children will complete a quiz and then receive a certificate and a patch.
- We are looking for volunteers to help with the table and exercise.
- Date: Saturday, August 9th @ 5pm
Updates
- Barbershop Initiative
- Anita Linton has been a shining star in regards to the barbershop program. She has trained 26 barbers with 17 being in Atlantic County.
- The program is going to be funded for another year and she will continue with this project.
- Shore Memorial Hospital Cancer Center holds the grant for the barbershop for the entire southern county region. It is $95,000 and 11 counties.
- Pleasantville Cancer Initiative
- The Eliminating Health Disparities Committee under the PCI Initiative is focusing on getting people in Pleasantville screened. There are a couple of special screenings scheduled for September.
- September 17th at the Atlantic County Division of Public Health
- September 30th at the Southern Family Medical Center
- Advocacy Update
- Marge Scanny discussed advocacy. She explained that Atlantic County was the only county in New Jersey in which our politicians met with ACS to accept our survivor letters. She also offered training to anyone who would be interested in getting involved in politics. She is an ACS Ambassador for Atlantic County and regularly converses with our local politicians to educate and talk about important health care and cancer topics.
- An example of something going on right now is Michelle’s Law. A law to allow parents to continue to cover college students on their health insurance if their children would need to break from school for cancer treatment.
- OCCP Update
- New website coming
- Received level funding. (1.5 million with 1.3 going to the counties for coalition activities ($65,000 for each county))
- Conferences coming up:
- Survivorship Conference – November 5, 2008
- 3rd Childhood Survivor Conference – May 16, 2009.
- Ovarian Conference – May 2009
