Celebrating Women's Femininity: A Breast Cancer Survivor's Fashion Show - May 2008

On Saturday, May 3, 2008 the coalition provided their third breast cancer survivors’ fashion show.  “Celebrating Women’s Femininity:  A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fashion Show” was held at Wash’s in Pleasantville, New Jersey.  The facility was bursting at the seams with every seat filled.  250 women attended and approximately 95% were African American women.  The coalition targeted African American women specifically because of the breast cancer mortality rate.  It was a fantastic event.  The highlight of the day was a reenactment of “Where’s Shirley?” a play about African American women and breast cancer.  The day was fun, educational and focused on breast cancer screening and the importance of getting a mammogram every year.  Teresa Berry (NBC 40) hosted the event again this year and was fantastic as always.  A Shining Star Award was also given to JoAnn Peopples for her excellent volunteer work in breast cancer awareness.  Lastly, the eight models who were all breast cancer survivors looked wonderful in the Dress Barn (Atlantic City) fashions and had a truly special day.

A special thank you to all the people who were involved in this event - from the committee to the volunteers, to the audience for coming.  Everyone was needed to make it a success.

This event was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services’ Office of Cancer Control and Prevention and the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program.  The mission statement of the ACHLC is to implement the New Jersey Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan in Atlantic County.  For more information on Comprehensive Cancer Control or the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program, please visit: www.state.nj.us/health/cancer.
