- Tobacco Education Committee – Chairperson: Linda Duca & Bob Schall
- The committee is responsible for projects that educate the public on the dangers of tobacco.
- The committee is working on their next project “Hands of Hope for a Tobacco Free World”. Camden County Cancer Coalition participated in this event with the RiverSharks baseball team last summer. The fans coming to the ballgame were able to write their own personal messages or draw pictures on hand cut-outs. The hands were collected, linked together and displayed. This makes a clear statement from young to old that we need continued support for tobacco related services. The committee will be taking this project to a group or organization similar to what the Camden County did where they can find a large group of people and collect their hands. The goal is set to collect 10,000 hands from across the nation.
- Next Meeting: To be announced.

- The coalition will be presenting the New Jersey Youth Educator Badge program to a Girl Scout Troop on Saturday, March 28th from 10am to 12 noon in the Cancer Center Conference Room.
Updates:
- Barbershop Initiative
- Anita Linton reported that since our last meeting 22 more barbers have been trained in the counties of Atlantic City, Burlington and Gloucester.
- Since our last meeting 18 men have been screened, 13 of those were screened at one event and all 13 were negative.
- This program has grown, evolved and is changing into something more than we expected. Anita is now assisting these men with getting doctor appointments and getting the needed follow up care.
- Anita continues to work on getting the free haircut & prostate screening events to be hosted in areas that will draw more men to get their screenings.
- CEED Update
- Marge Scanny reported the CEED numbers. The goal is to screen 800 women for breast and cervical cancer this year. At the end of the second quarter 12/31/08, there have been 196 women screened for breast cancer and 343 screened for cervical cancer. The cervical numbers are higher due to younger women having a pap test done but are not age appropriate to have a mammogram screening.
- We are in the re-application process of the grant.
- Southern Jersey Family Medical is coming along nicely as new providers for referring women to the CEED program.
- Please let us know of any places where women gather that may be appropriate to hold a “Friend to Friend Party”. The women will learn about breast health and the importance of getting their routine mammogram screenings.
- Advocacy Update
- Marge Scanny reports that with a new administration coming into the White House that there will be a revamping process that needs to take place. There will be meetings with all of the state representatives to review talking points and discuss what we want and need to pursue. Funding for cancer research, cancer screenings and access to care will continue to be important issues.
- Marge reminded the coalition to please stay in touch with your legislator’s. Log a call into their office or write a letter to them. As a constituent they need to hear from you, you are the key to their understanding of issues that are important to you and your communities. Especially if you have had a positive or helpful experience with the ACHLC, CEED or Tobacco Grants.
- OCCP Update

- Date change for the Childhood Cancer Survivorship Conference – June 9, 2009.
