Committee Activities

Members are encouraged to participate in a committee.  The committees are where the activities are planned and organized.

  • Community Education Committee – Chairperson:  Joanne Kinsey
    • Responsible for community education and specifically one cancer event each year.
    • The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fashion Show was held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center located in Egg Harbor Twp.  Teresa Berry from NBC 40 hosted and did a great job, lunch was provided along with prizes and giveaways. Anita Linton spoke on “10 Myths of Breast Cancer”.  She too did a great job. The clothing was donated by the Dress Barn of Atlantic City and the models that were comfortable with sharing their personal stories, or poems or points of interest did so as they modeled the clothing. Everyone really enjoyed the program especially the closing poem by JoAnn Peopples.
    • A Road to Good Health program will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd from 10am to 12 noon at the Viking Academy in Atlantic City. Educational tables will be set up and will provide colorful posters, interesting props and hands on activities regarding nutrition, exercise, stress, not smoking and the prevention of various diseases and cancers. Physical activities, dancing and games will also be offered.
    • Next Meeting:  TBD

  • Healthy Lifestyle Committee – Chairperson:  Ben Mount
    • Responsible for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle to the public in response to the NJ-CCCP and CHIP/MAPP.
    • The committee is currently planning a family event scheduled for the evening of Friday, August, 14, 2009.  This will be a 1 ½ mile loop walking event along the Atlantic County Bike Path starting at the Shore Mall and heading toward Ridge Ave. There is a good open space (20 space parking lot) plus surrounding grass area at the start of the Bike Path that would be a good location for a carnival style health fair and exhibits. We have received approval for the Bike Path by Atlantic County. Activities will cover topics such as nutrition, exercise and stress management.
    • Next Meeting:  TBD

  • Palliative Care Committee – Chairperson:  Marianne Herman
    • This committee is responsible for addressing palliative care issues in Atlantic County and to educate professionals and the public regarding palliative care.
    • The Physician Conference will be held at Harbor Pines Country Club on Ocean Heights Ave. in Egg Harbor Township on May 7th at 6pm. The speaker is Dr. David Casarett from the University of Pennsylvania; he will be speaking on the topic of Palliative Care and Hospice conversations with patients. There will also be a second portion on how to bill for Palliative Care and Hospice Services.
    • “Making a Healthier You” Workshop Series are targeting senior centers, 55+ communities, workplaces and organizations. Topics offered are: Healthy Lifestyle Choices, Cancer Prevention 101, Aging with Dignity & Emergency Preparedness. These workshops are brought to the location of the group or organization. Please contact Angela if you would like a specific workshop put together on a different topic or know of a group, workplace or organization that would be interested in hosting one of these workshops.
    • Next Meeting: Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 9:30am (wrap up meeting)

  • Professional Education Committee – Chairperson:  Erin McAllister
    • Responsible for one local professional event each year.
    • This committee is geared toward nurses and social workers and usually has their event in the fall of the year and partners with the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. They have been on break, but will be starting shortly on their next project.
    • Next Meeting: TBD

  • Tobacco Education Committee – Chairpersons:  Linda Duca & Bob Schall
    • The committee is responsible for projects that educate the public on the dangers of smoking.
    • The committee is working on their next project “Hands of Hope for a Tobacco Free World”. Camden County Cancer Coalition participated in this event with the RiverSharks baseball team last summer. The fans coming to the ballgame were able to write their own personal messages or draw pictures on hand cut-outs. The hands were collected, linked together and displayed. This makes a clear statement from young to old that we need continued support for tobacco related services. Since we lost our local baseball team, the committee will be taking this project to a new venue, groups or organizations where they can find large groups of people and collect their personalized hands. The goal is set to collect 10,000 hands from across the nation.
    • Next Meeting:  Tuesday, May 19th at 9:00am

Updates:

  • CEED Update
    • Marge Scanny reported the CEED numbers. Since July, 2008 there have been 317 women screened for breast cancer and 580 screened for cervical cancer. The cervical numbers are higher due to younger women having a pap test done but are not age appropriate to have a mammogram screening. There have been 368 new women added to the program and 729 total women served.  There was a 50% re-        screened rate and our goal is 75%. However, we think that is due to an increase in newly uninsured in our area due to job loss and loss of health insurance. There   were 33 prostate screenings performed.
    • The Cancer Education Early Detection and Tobacco grants have been completed and submitted. The Atlantic County Healthy Living Coalition grant application   will be ready for submission at the end of this month.
    • CEED is looking for help to promote early cancer screenings for the Pleasantville area.  If you could help with this effort, please contact Marge Scanny (msacanny@shorememorial.org).

  • Advocacy Update
    • Marge Scanny reports that everyone wants to know “Where is Health Care Reform going”?  She recommends for us to log onto: www.finance.senate.gov and read “Call to Action Health Reform 2009” by the senate finance committee chairman Max Baucus.  She thinks this paper most likely will be turned into the proposal for the bill that is introduced.  She encourages anyone in the health care field to take a look at this because it will affect everyone in some way.
    • Marge reminded the coalition that when this bill is introduced the American Cancer Society will be very involved in this process. So engage your Senator by logging a call into their office or write a letter to them. As a constituent they need to hear from you, you are the key to their understanding of issues that are important to you and your communities.

  • OCCP Update
    • The E-Newsletter went out.
    • Prostate Grant was funded – Evaluation committee reports that there was a 10.5% increase in Colorectal screenings and 12.2% increase in Prostate.
    • Childhood Cancer Survivorship Conference – June 9, 2009.
    • The Choose Your Cover – Shore to Shore project will be held Saturday, July 25, 2009 with a goal of 2000 screenings.
    • See the attached “State Update” for additional information
