According to American Cancer Society 12,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer in 2011 and 4,290 women will die from cervical cancer in 2011. According to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, New Jersey Cancer Registry approximately 90 women between 2002 and 2007 were diagnosed with cervical cancer and 37 women died of cervical cancer in Atlantic County. Cervical cancer was once the most common cause of cancer death, but after 1955 and the advance of the Pap, that number has gone down substantially.

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus which connects the body of the uterus to the vagina. Cervical cancer begins in the lining of the cervix and generally does not form suddenly. Cells begin to change from normal to pre-cancer and then cancer. This can take a number of years, although sometimes it happens more quickly. These changes are referred to by several terms, including dysplasia. Sometimes these changes may go away without treatment, but more often they need to be treated to prevent them from changing into true cancers.

Cervical Cancer Risk Factors

Certain risk factors increase a person’s chance of getting the disease. This does not mean the person will get the disease nor does it mean people without specific risk factors will not get the disease. It only means there is an increased chance.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) – a sexually transmitted disease

Smoking

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) – a sexually transmitted disease

Chlamydia – a sexually transmitted disease

Diet low in fruit and vegetables

Birth control pills

Having many full term pregnancies

Young age at first full term pregnancy

Poverty

DES (diethylstilbestrol) -a hormone miscarriage drug used between 1940 and 1971

Family History

Cervical Cancer Screening Recommendations

Most cervical cancers can be prevented by avoiding the risk factors and having a routine Pap test (a painless sample of mucus and cells scraped from the cervix). Young women can delay having sex until they are older and protect themselves against sexually transmitted disease by engaging in fewer partners. (Condoms do not protect against HPV, but do help protect against other sexually transmitted diseases.) Women can also quit smoking or never smoke to begin with to decrease risk. American Cancer Society recommends all women should begin having the Pap test within three years after they begin having sex (vaginal intercourse), but no later than age 21 years of age. Conventional Pap test should be performed every year, but liquid Pap tests can be done every two years. A pelvic exam still needs to be completed every year even if your Pap tests are not. A pelvic exam should not be confused with a Pap test. Patients should talk with their doctors about important cancer screenings and should be going to their gynecologist annually as long as there are not problems or symptoms. Any abnormal symptoms should be reported to your doctor right away.

Increasing the Accuracy of your Pap Test:

Do not schedule an appointment during your menstrual period.

Do not douche 48 hours before the test.

Do not have sexual intercourse 48 hours before the test.

Do not use tampons, birth control foams, jellies, or other vaginal creams or vaginal medications 48 hours before the test.

Grant Year: 2010-2011

The Atlantic County Healthy Living Coalition was established in the fall of 2004 and is funded by theNew JerseyDepartment of Health (NJDHSS) and Senior Services, Office of Cancer Control and Prevention. Each year we report the work of the coalition through progress reports to NJDHSS. In order to get the new website up and running quickly we are going to use the fourth quarter progress reports to showcase the work we have completed over the grant years for the past five years. Please see below for details of the 2010-2011 grant year.

Goal: Complete one cancer related event for African American women by June 30, 2011.

It has been decided that the coalition will not complete the annual fashion show. This was decided for multiple reasons including loss of funding. It has been decided that we will do some Friend to Friend Parties for African American women. Friend to Friend Parties are intimate gatherings in which we discuss the importance of a mammogram. Please see below for the events completed during the grant period:

10/21/10: Friend to Friend Party, Pleasantville, 17 women

3/19/11: Friend to Friend Party, Pleasantville, 19 women

Goal: Complete two “Cut Out Cancer” events for African American men by June 30, 2011.

Cut Out Cancers have been extremely difficult in AtlanticCounty. We had the opportunity to have a van in Atlantic City, but no provider. We scheduled one Cut Out Cancer with an extra clinic at the Atlantic County Division of Public Health where men could go to the clinic on June 10th, 9am-12pm and participate in the program by receiving a free hair cut. It was promoted through the Pleasantville Barber Shops because it is an easy bus hop to the clinic. No one showed.

We also hosted the New Age Hair and Health Luncheon in Atlantic City. This was an event for the barbers, their families and patrons. The event included education, celebration and honored one of our lost barbers. 30 people attended the event. Mostly fromAtlanticCounty.

Below are the Atlantic County Talk & Trims:

Goal: Complete 1 School Based Project

A Road to Good Health is a project that has been taken into the schools. It consists of taking over the gym classes. The class is divided into two in which one side focuses on physical exercise and the other focuses on health education. The students rotate within the sides and then switch half way through to do the other activities. A pre & post survey is completed and the program was recently IRB approved through Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Earlier in the year Joanne Kinsey and Angela Bailey presented at the Superintendent’s Round Table. We sent letters to all middle and high school principals to be delivered in January 2010 upon return to school and received several interested schools. The goal was to get a few more schools to participate. Below are the schools in which the program has taken place during the 2009/2010 school year. 1056 children have gone through the program. A full evaluation is still in progress.

Goal: Complete School Based Project

The Community Education Committee has developed a new teen health fair project for schools. It is a large complex project that is being taken to the schools. The committee wants to pilot it in a couple of schools this year and then potentially take it to more middle schools next year. The age targeted is 7th and 8th graders and would focus on a variety of health topics.

A Road to Good Health

Topics: Nutrition, Physical Exercise, Cancer Prevention, Heart Disease and Diabetes, and Mental Health

The first school was in Northfieldon February 6th, 2009. 535 students were educated. The committee took over the physical education class for the 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th graders. Each class was divided in two. One group participated in a variety of physical exercises while the other group was given a quiz and split in four. Each mini group went to each of the topic tables to find the answers on the quiz. There were a variety of hands on items and discussion at the tables. The two large groups then switched so all the students got to participate on each side. The students turned in their quizzes for a chance to win prizes and the teachers were asked to do follow up projects. The school was very pleased and we learned some good things to tweak.

The second school was VikingAcademyin Atlantic Cityon June 3rd, 2009. It was completed much the same way only it was for 7th through 12th graders. There were 100 students.

Goal: Complete 1 Healthy Lifestyle Event

The Healthy Lifestyle Committee put on the Five-A-Day Olympics this year on August 15, 2008. It featured Olympic style events with a fruit and veggie twist. It was a joint project with the Atlantic County Division of Public Health and it had a turn out of 124 participants representing 38 families. The event featured a variety of Olympic events with a fruit and veggie twist such as Grapefruit Shot-put and Veggie Basketball. There were individual events (two age groups), family events and tot games. There also were cooking demonstrations by Chef Mike, snacks (vegetable packs, fruit kabobs, popcorn, 100% juice water ice and water), trivia signs, balloon animals, medals and giveaways. The event was very easy going with people being able to visit and participate in different activities. It was full, but not overcrowded and the playground was also a nice addition. The event got a nice write up in a couple of papers and families enjoyed a free, fun event. A full evaluation is available and the county park has requested we do the event again.

Goal: State of New Jersey Cancer Awareness Youth Educator Badge.

The badge program has changed this year. Angela Bailey made up educational materials on nutrition, exercise, not smoking and sun safety. Children take a short ten question quiz on the materials and models available. After getting the ten questions they are given a certificate and badge. No information on the children is collected. They are just counted. This activity is offered as an activity for health fairs (especially in the schools) where we expect lots of children. The goal is to do 5 events this year. Five events were completed over the year with 98 patches given out.

8/9/08 – Family Fun Day, EHT – 33 patches

Final Numbers: 54 barbers have been trained. The program is in nine of eleven counties (all butSalemandCape MayCounty). 51 men have been screened for prostate cancer. The 51 men are men that have been screened at screening events. We do not know how many men have been screened as a result of the program, but we do assume additional men are getting screened using either private insurance or the CEED program.

Committee Activities

Each year, at the close of the grant we take a look at the progress and evaluate how the coalition is doing. At the end of this year, both the breast and prostate committee completed their projects. It is a good time to evaluate the committees projects and make adjustments. It is recommended that the topic cancer committees which work on public education join together and become the Community Education Committee. The Professional Community Education Committee is going to become the Professional Education Committee because they are focused on professional events. Palliative Care Committee will remain the same and the coalition is looking to develop the Healthy Lifestyle Committee. Any members that do not agree with these changes should contact Angela Bailey as soon as possible. Sign-up sheets were passed around for members to sign up for a committee.

Several projects are already taking place and several suggestions have been made. The following projects have been divided up into the appropriate committees. This does not mean the committee has to do the project, only it is where it has been placed as of now. The committee will ultimately decide which projects they want to work on and may also decide to work on something not listed below.

Goal: Complete 1 Cancer Related Project by June 30, 2007.

Projects

Palliative Care Committee Survey – Complete by June 30, 2007. This projects concept is:

A four series survey: Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Community and Physicians are being surveyed on palliative care knowledge. The physician’s survey is complete.

“Aging with Dignity in Today’s Healthcare System” Lecture was the first public outreach effort by the palliative care committee. It occurred on March 7, 2007 at the Fairways in Mays Landing. The palliative care committee presented palliative care information such as “What is Palliative Care”, “What is the difference between Hospice and Palliative Care”, and “Advanced Directives” to a community of 55 and over during their coffee hour. It was well attended and we have been invited back to discuss other topics. The group was very inquisitive and asked lots of questions. It was a great first effort. 52 people attended.

A poster presentation was also presented at the ELNEC Conference on March 22nd & March 23rd inAtlantic City,NJ. The poster focused on the survey project the palliative care committee is working on and information about their collaborative efforts. Approximately 200 professionals attended.

The palliative care committee presented on May 8, 2007 to the coalition as a whole.

The committee’s first professional event occurred on May 9th & 16th. It was a two day seminar for end of life issues. It was held jointly with the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and the Oncology Nursing Society. The conference went very well with 20 people in attendance.

2007/2008 – Melanoma School Project – This project is still ongoing.

A curriculum has been developed for a curriculum tool box for the local high school and middle schools. This will go out to the schools and include the DVD we were given last year. We held on to them until this year because the schools let out at the same week that we received the video. We are reaching out to the schools and hope to enact the full project during the next school year.

Goal: Increase Coalition Membership to include 20 Additional Community Partners by June 30, 2007. Emphasis on NJCEED Partnerships.

The coalition has revaluated the membership and has identified specific areas in which the coalition is lacking membership. Community (laypeople), survivors, educational and political people are missing from the coalition. The coalition will place an effort for a more active CEED committee to focus on CEED topics specifically.

Progress: We had two large events in the last quarter and did not increase the membership. This is the only objective that was not completed and we will continue to work on it during the next grant period.

Additional outreach events for the fourth quarter

Samaritan Hospice Lunch In-Service – ShoreMemorialHospitalCancerCenter (Lecture and lunch event.) Wednesday, April 4, 2007 30 Participants

Men’s Head Start In-Service – Atlantic City, NJ Head Start (Health Education) Friday, May 4, 2007 35 Participants

Poster Project

Angela Bailey currently produces articles for the website each month. Generally the information is based on the “Awareness Topic” of the month. She is then going to take that information and create a poster that can be displayed in the hospital. This information will be forwarded to coalition members in which they may feel free to also make posters for their organization should they desire. A logo will be included and a place for the organizations logo will also be included. More information is to come.
