ACHLC – Grant Year 2010/2011
The Atlantic County Healthy Living Coalition was established in the fall of 2004 and is funded by theNew JerseyDepartment of Health (NJDHSS) and Senior Services, Office of Cancer Control and Prevention. Each year we report the work of the coalition through progress reports to NJDHSS. In order to get the new website up and running quickly we are going to use the fourth quarter progress reports to showcase the work we have completed over the grant years for the past five years. Please see below for details of the 2010-2011 grant year.
Goal: Complete one cancer related event for African American women by June 30, 2011.
It has been decided that the coalition will not complete the annual fashion show. This was decided for multiple reasons including loss of funding. It has been decided that we will do some Friend to Friend Parties for African American women. Friend to Friend Parties are intimate gatherings in which we discuss the importance of a mammogram. Please see below for the events completed during the grant period:
- 10/21/10: Friend to Friend Party, Pleasantville, 17 women
- 3/19/11: Friend to Friend Party, Pleasantville, 19 women
- 3/26/11: Hair by Marion, Pleasantville, 4 women
Goal: Complete two “Cut Out Cancer” events for African American men by June 30, 2011.
Cut Out Cancers have been extremely difficult in AtlanticCounty. We had the opportunity to have a van in Atlantic City, but no provider. We scheduled one Cut Out Cancer with an extra clinic at the Atlantic County Division of Public Health where men could go to the clinic on June 10th, 9am-12pm and participate in the program by receiving a free hair cut. It was promoted through the Pleasantville Barber Shops because it is an easy bus hop to the clinic. No one showed.
We also hosted the New Age Hair and Health Luncheon in Atlantic City. This was an event for the barbers, their families and patrons. The event included education, celebration and honored one of our lost barbers. 30 people attended the event. Mostly fromAtlanticCounty.
